MATANOT L'VEYONIM - GIVING TO THOSE IN NEED ON PURIM DAY
A BRIEF EXPLANATION
Since it is titled a “Gift” (Matonos), a significant amount must be given. The gift should be enough for the poor man to buy a Purim Seudah –
estimated at about $10 per poor person, totaling $20 per donor.
Some authorities maintain that even giving $1 per poor person enough to buy something small to eat, technically fulfills the minimum obligation (Yotzei).
However, Maimonides (Rambam) teaches that one should prioritize and increase giving to Matanot La’Evyonim even more than spending on one’s own Seudat Purim or on Mishloach Manot. He writes that there is no greater joy before Hashem than bringing happiness to the hearts of the poor, the orphaned, and the widowed.
